The Anonymous Love Letter
Leave a beautiful message for a stranger to find.
It is such a beautiful thing to do — for both the writer and for the recipient. Doing this with your kids can also be a very beautiful thing to do.
So, get some paper or download the template below and write a love letter that you plan to leave somewhere in public — for someone you don't know to find (see below for a sample letter that I have written).
This is anonymous, so you don't sign with your name, and you don't include contact details or anything like that. It is simply a message of love.
It can be sweet and playful or profoundly sincere. There is no right or wrong in what you write as long as everything comes from a place of loving kindness. And you never know, maybe this one act of kindness could send someone down a completely different path. Maybe one positive or generous thing you say or a piece of advice you share could blow their minds or bring a new perspective that might just be the exact thing they needed to hear today. Your letter might even save someone's life.
When you leave your love letter somewhere, though, it's important not to hang around to see who gets it. Not to wait to see a reaction. The whole idea is to leave it as a gift that seeks nothing in return.
Ideally put the letter in an envelope and on the front of the envelope, write "For You" and then on the back of the envelope write "Yes, you." Just to reassure the person who finds the letter that they are definitely the one who was meant to receive the letter.
Below is a love letter for you right now. This was written for you to read at this exact moment. Not as an exercise. But as a gift. And as an example to inspire you to write your own version for someone.
A love letter for you
(yes, you)
Dearest darling,
This letter is meant for you.
I don't have anything grand to say today.
But if I could help you have a better today, I would.
If I could remind you to try to keep your heart open despite the way life looks sometimes, I would.
Life dares us to doubt ourselves and it can hit us pretty hard, but don't fall for it.
There is beauty and kindness everywhere if you have the courage to remember how important it is.
Do what you can today to be more loving with yourself and maybe consider sending a loving text to someone you love who you haven't spoken to for a while.
Maybe find a piece of music and send a family member the link so they can listen to it now.
Or maybe get your bare feet on the ground and remember that in nature, you can remember that you are nature.
Remembering that in your heart, you know everything you need to do. And whatever courage it takes to do whatever needs to be done, will serve you and bless you forevermore.
And finally, remember that we are always blessed to the degree that we believe we are blessed.
That isn't always easy, but it is always true.
Loving you more than you will ever know.
A fellow human.
A friend.
If this letter moved you
there is more.
If you found this letter and it spoke to something in you, here are five ways to go further into the work.
